Three of the best new resorts in Fiji

Kokomo Private Island

Kokomo Private Island

These new resorts redefine barefoot luxury, Fijian style.

Kokomo Private Island

Opened last year on a 56-hectare island in Fiji's Kadavu island group, this is the passion project of billionaire Australian developer Lang Walker. With butlers, nannies and chefs on call (among them Australian-born executive chef Anthony Healy), Kokomo's five hilltop "residences" with three to six bedrooms and large pools are ideal for groups and extended families. And 21 beachfront villas cater to smaller groups and couples. Yet the resort's most compelling feature is what lies just beyond its beaches: the Great Astrolabe Reef, the world's fourth largest.

Six Senses Fiji

Stay tuned for the Fijian début of stylish resort group Six Senses on a private bay on Malolo Island in the Mamanucas. Set to open next month, it will have 26 pool bures of between 74 and 180 square metres and 60 flash residences with three to five bedrooms. Highlights include a surf school run by the well-regarded Tropic Surf safari operator, and tailored "multidimensional Six Senses integrated wellness programs" encompassing spa treatments, exercise, yoga, meditation, eating plans, sleep tips and personal guidance.

Vomo Island

The resort emerged from a multimillion-dollar makeover in 2015 and then another in 2016 after the onslaught of Cyclone Winston. Its 32 villas were rebuilt, two new private residences of three and four bedrooms apiece added and a huge landscaping project undertaken. Frequent visitors, meanwhile, rejoiced at the return of baby butlers and The Rocks bar for sundowners. Vomo is the island's sole occupant so guests have 87 hectares of tropical playground and a nearby deserted island, Vomo Lailai, to themselves.
